Using a DC adapter to charge a battery

Question: Can I use this type of 12V/3A adapter to charge a 12V LP Battery?

Answer: Most likely no, you cannot use this adapter for changing, because the voltage of the DC adapter is too low to make the charging.

With 12V LP battery, the nominal voltage is 12.8V (4x 3.2V). To charge you need a power supply (a charger) that will have higher voltage than the nominal voltage of the battery.

When charging the 12V LP battery, you should charge up to 14.6V (3.65V per cell). This means you need to use a 15V power supply (and stop the charging when reaching 14.6V).

However we need to give you some warning when you try to charge a battery from a power supply:

1) You need to monitor the charge process and stop the charging when the charge voltage is reached.  If you keep charging above the full charge voltage (typically 14.6V) you will be over charging the battery and dedicated charger designed to charge a battery.

Always supervise the charging process and avoid any danger of fire, cell overcharge or overheating. Our suggestion is:  Any battery charging must be properly monitored by a human operator!
